2013 Iowa Hunger Summit

Cowles middle school and a few third grade students were invited to attend The 2013 Iowa Hunger Summit sponsored by The World Food Prize Foundation.  The Foundation was very impressed with the gardens at Cowles and even more impressed with the fact that we were able to donate excess produce from our garden to the local community.  The students were also invited to package meals to feed hungry Iowans at the Iowa Hunger Fight meal packaging event presented by DuPont Pioneer.  The meal at the luncheon was one of three small portion choices: porridge, rice/beans, macaroni and cheese.  This portion size was the same portion that children in countries like Africa and India would get.  This would be there only meal from an organization called: Mary’s Meals.  The Key Note Speaker was the founder of Mary’s Meals and spoke in more detail about his organization.  The Governor even stopped by the Cowles tables and talked to our students complimenting them on their day of service.
